Family History Is Part of My Roots
Sweet Martha’s Family Farmacy has always been rooted in more than plants.
It is rooted in family.
The land, the herbs I grow, the knowledge passed between generations, and even the name Sweet Martha’s are connected to the people who came before me. Long before I became a farmer and herbalist, I was researching my family history.
For more than 30 years, I have worked to uncover names, records, relationships, stories, and family connections that might otherwise have been lost. My research has taken me through census records, vital records, historical documents, family photographs, oral histories, DNA connections, archives, cemeteries, conversations with elders, and stories passed from one generation to the next.
As a descendant of families deeply rooted in Alabama’s Black Belt and the Gee’s Bend community, I understand how complicated African American and Southern genealogy can be. Names change. Records conflict. Family stories fill gaps that official documents leave behind. Sometimes the answer is in a record. Sometimes it takes following several small clues until they begin to tell a larger story.
