When I think about the women whose strength, creativity, and determination helped shape my family, I think about my great-grandmother Martha Jane Pettway, whom I called Grandma.

Grandma was a quilter, a civil rights leader, and a matriarch whose influence reached far beyond the beautiful quilts she created. She raised my mother, along with many of her other grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Depending on our generation, we called her Mama or Grandma.

As a descendant of the Pettway, Bendolph, and Miller families of Gee's Bend, Alabama, preserving Grandma's story is deeply personal to me.

History Behind the Piece

Martha Jane Pettway was among the early documented quilters of Gee's Bend, Alabama, a community whose remarkable quilting traditions have earned international recognition.
